Composition :
- 13x13 cm bag containing 2 Canary Palm seeds.
How to grow :
- Sowing: Open the bag and pour the seeds into your hand. If they are too small, add sand to make sowing easier. To sow, sprinkle seeds over moist but not compacted coco potting soil, placing a maximum of 2-3 seeds per pot. Save the remaining seeds for later sowing, or sow them directly in your garden or balcony on sunny days. Gently cover the seeds with fertilized coco potting soil and pack lightly.
- Watering: Preferably use rainwater or filtered (chlorine-free) water. Water with a fine mist, without touching the plants excessively, ideally with a hand-held sprayer. This will keep the soil just moist, without saturating it with water. Think of the soil as a damp sponge, then wring it out. Be gentle and measured when watering.
- Germination: Phoenix canariensis needs a warm, humid climate. Expose seeds to sunlight behind glass, without placing them directly on a radiator, and ideally with a plastic water bottle cut to serve as a mini-greenhouse. Seeds may take 1 to 2 weeks to germinate. Keep the seedlings under the plastic bottle for as long as possible to conserve heat and moisture. Place them in a warm place, ideally at 25°C. Be patient, as germination can be slow and uneven, sometimes extending over several months.
- Transplanting: When seedlings emerge and reach 3 to 5 cm in height, keep only one plant per pot and transplant the others into new pots or planters, maintaining warmth and humidity. Be careful not to break stems or roots when transplanting. Water to encourage recovery. You can remove the pots when the plants are well established and the temperature is right.
- Growth: One day, you'll notice the first distinct leaves, with a single midrib and folds. The following year, you'll see the first three distinct pinnate leaves. Every year, or even twice a year in warmer regions, repot in a larger pot with very rich potting soil, as the palm is a greedy plant.
- Additional tip: You can speed up germination by placing the seeds in a closed plastic bag containing moist vermiculite or sand, then place the whole thing in an oven or similar place, at 35°C. Check the condition of the germinated seeds every week and transplant immediately, taking care to avoid breaking the seed.
