Composition :
- 1 black terracotta pot, stamped
- 1 sachet of poppy seeds for sowing
- 2 coconut earth tablets to rehydrate
Growing instructions :
- Coco soil: To promote successful germination, start by soaking fertilized coco soil pellets in 5 to 6 times their volume of water: they will swell instantly. Don't forget to keep a small portion to cover the seeds after sowing.
- Sowing: Open the bag and pour the seeds into your hand. If the seeds are too small, add sand to make sowing easier. To sow, sprinkle seeds over moist, loose coconut soil, 2 to 3 seeds maximum per pot. Keep the rest of the seeds for later sowing, or to sow directly in your garden or on your balcony when the weather's right. Gently cover the seeds with fertilized coconut soil and pack lightly.
- Watering: Ideally, use rainwater or filtered (chlorine-free) water. Prefer light rainfall, ideally using a hand-held sprayer, to keep the soil just moist, but not waterlogged, throughout the growing period. Imagine the soil remaining like a wet sponge, then wrung out. Don't let the soil dry out.
- Germination: expose to sunlight behind glass, without heating, to encourage rapid and abundant germination. Alternatively, from April onwards, expose to sunlight on your balcony, windowsill or terrace. Flower seeds take a few days to germinate, and the plant then grows if well watered.
- Transplanting: there's no need to transplant, as the plant can be sown or planted directly. If necessary, aerate the plant by removing a few seedlings if it is too dense.
- Poppy flowering: The red flower appears in June and July. There's no need to cut it to make bouquets, as the stem won't hold in a vase. It's definitely a wild field flower. At the end of flowering, you'll see a dry calyx containing the seeds. Leave in place for flowers the following year (perennial flower).
- Our tip: Make sweet poppy syrup! 400g of fresh poppy flowers, 1/2 liter of boiling water and a little sugar are all you need to make a good poppy syrup, ideal for soothing coughs or simply as a treat. Pour the petals into boiling water, where they quickly melt. Leave to infuse for 10 mins, then strain through cheesecloth, pressing well to release all the juice. Add the same weight of cane sugar as the juice obtained. Return to the heat and bubble for a few moments. Pour into bottles and close immediately.
