Composition :
- 1 terracotta pot "Antique", diameter 13cm
- 1 bag of Lemongrass (Lemongrass Cymbopogon flexuosus)
- 3 coconut lozenges to rehydrate
- 1 mode of cultivation
Cultivation mode :
- Coconut lands: To promote successful germination, start by soaking the fertilized coconut lozenges in 5 to 6 times their volume of water: they will instantly swell. Do not forget to keep a small portion to cover the seeds after sowing.
- Citronella inside: Open the bag and pour seeds into your hand. Start by soaking the lemongrass seeds in warm water for about 24 hours. This can help soften the outer shell of seeds and encourage germination. For sowing, sprinkle the seeds on the wet uncompact coconut soil, maximum 2 to 3 seeds per pot. Sow the lemongrass seeds on the surface of the substrate, spacing them about 1 to 2 centimeters. Save the rest of the seeds for later sowing or to sow directly in your garden or on your balcony when the weather is nice. Gently cover the seeds with fertilized coconut soil and tamp lightly.
- Watering: Ideally use rainwater or filtered water (without chlorine). Prefer a fine rain watering, ideally using a hand sprayer, to keep the soil just wet, without gorging it with water, throughout the culture. Think of the soil as a wet sponge and then wrung out. Do not let the coconut soil dry.
- Germination: Expose to sunlight behind a glass, without putting on top of a heating, to promote rapid and abundant germination. Otherwise, from April on, expose yourself to the sun on your balcony, window sill or terrace. Germination takes a week for Citronella and the plant grows quickly if it does not lack water.
- Transplanting: When the seedlings emerge and reach a height of 5 to 10 cm, select only one plant per pot and transplant the others into new pots or planters. You can replant directly in your garden if the temperature allows it, spacing the plants by 20 to 30 cm. Water to promote regrowth.
- Flowering: Lemongrass (Cymbopogon flexuosus) is a plant that grows relatively quickly once established. Usually you can expect the lemongrass to reach a harvestable size in about 3-6 months after sowing seeds.
- Our advice: Water plants regularly and provide them with a balanced fertilizer every month to promote healthy growth. Prune leaves and stems as needed to encourage new growth and harvest Citronella leaves for cooking. Leaves naturally keep out mosquitoes and other insects. Feel free to put a pot on your outdoor table in the summer.
