Composition :
- 1 terracotta pot "Basalt" diameter 13cm
- 1 bag of purple Tomatillo Physalis ixocarpa to sow
- 3 coconut lozenges to rehydrate
- 1 mode of cultivation
Cultivation mode :
- Coconut lands: To promote successful germination, start by soaking the fertilized coconut lozenges in 5 to 6 times their volume of water: they will instantly swell. Do not forget to keep a small portion to cover the seeds after sowing.
- Tomatillos inside: Open the bag and pour seeds into your hand. If they are too small, add sand to make it easier to sow. For sowing, sprinkle the seeds on the wet uncompact coconut soil, maximum 2 to 3 seeds per pot. Save the rest of the seeds for later sowing or to sow directly in your garden or on your balcony when the weather is nice. Gently cover the seeds with fertilized coconut soil and tamp lightly.
- Watering: Ideally use rainwater or filtered water (without chlorine). Prefer a fine rain watering, ideally using a hand sprayer, to keep the soil just wet, without gorging it with water, throughout the culture. Water the soil and not the leaves because it can bring diseases to young vegetables. Imagine the soil as a wet sponge then drained. Do not let the coconut soil dry.
- Germination: Expose to sunlight behind a glass, without putting on top of a heating, to promote rapid and abundant germination. The germination of tomatillos takes a few days and the plant grows quickly.
- Transplanting: When the seedlings emerge and reach 3 to 5 cm in height, select only one plant per pot and transplant the others into new pots or planters. Water to promote regrowth.
- Harvest: Purple tomatillos are ready to be harvested when they are fully ripe and the outer shells begin to crack. This usually occurs about 2-3 months after transplanting. Pick the fruits by gently detaching them from the plant. The tomatillos can be kept in their envelope for a few weeks in the fridge and are delicious in salads and as an aperitif vegetable.
- To know: Tomatillos are an essential ingredient in Mexican cuisine. Their acidulous and fruity flavor adds a unique dimension to dishes, and they are often used fresh or cooked to create sauces, marinades. Tomatillos are often referred to as “Mexican tomatoes”.
